As an “alum,” I’m so happy to see KDKA live on and prosper. I go back to the old Group W network..covering spaceflight. My connection to KDKA goes back to childhood and Ed Shaughnessey. Then came Rege Cordic. Great talents..grand times. Glad to have been a (very) small part of it.

[...] On this date in 1920, Pittsburgh radio station KDKA first took to the airwaves, becomming the the first commercial broadcaster in the WORLD. At 6 p.m. on Nov. 2, 1920, 8KX became KDKA Radio and began broadcasting at 100 watts from a make-shift shack atop one of the Westinghouse manufacturing buildings in East Pittsburgh. The Pittsburgh Post provided election returns by telephone, and returns were relayed to almost a thousand listeners, who learned through this fantastic new medium that Warren G. Harding had defeated James M. Cox in the presidential race. You can listen in Real Audio format to part of this first official broadcast from KDKA here. [...]

The worlds first commercial radio broadcast of the Harding -Cox preidential election results was done by KDKA
from the East Pittsburgh Westinghouse Electric Plant ,K Building roof which was in TURTLE CREEK PA….it’s time to correct the inaccuracy. Thanks for 90 years of great broadcasting…KDKA is the best radio station in the world!!!

Jeff, You are such a nice looking young man, please shave off that little beard you are growing. It looks terrible, sorry that is my opinion.

  • Mike

Don’t forget to mention Frank Conrad’s role as founder of KDKA…

I’m studying radio right now for a degree in communication. Incredible that KDKA still operates today. I LOVE radio and that the original AM station is still alive is inspiring! Can’t wait for the 100 year anniversary!
