Authorities in Lawrence County say a wood stove fire inside an Amish family’s home apparently started a fire that killed a mother and her two young daughters.

State police in Lawrence County say 31-year-old Katie Kurtz and 3-year-old Anna and 8-year-old Sally died in the blaze reported at about 12:30 p.m. Saturday on Route 208, near New Wilmington.

Trooper Troy Steinheiser says the family was apparently trying to start a wood-burning stove in the kitchen. He says the bodies of the victims were found there and in adjacent rooms.

The deaths are being investigated by local detectives, the coroner’s office and a state fire marshal.
