Chris Kemoeatu Defends Big Ben

Steelers beat reporter Jon Burton caught up with Steelers Guard Chris Kemoeatu to talk about Richard Seymour’s open-handed slap to the face of Ben Roethlisberger. Kemoeatu was really mad about that and said Ben was just walking past them and never said anything to Seymour.

Kemoeatu thinks the talk about how this rivalry was so heated in the past, might have contributed to the intensity on Sunday.

Josh Miller and Andrew Filliponi should listen to this interview. Despite Kemoeatu’s retaliation and subsequent personal foul penalty for what the referree said was “an open handed slap to the helmet”, they both did an entire show yesterday on how nobody on the Steelers came to Ben’s defense. Miller even insinuated that the players in the locker-room don’t respect Roethlisberger and the reaction would have been much more severe had Batch been the QB.

I usually like their show, but they were way off base and misleading here. The video of the incident clearly shows the entire offensive line coming to Ben’s defense, despite all of the officials putting themselves in between the two teams. Kemoeatu’s slap isn’t seen on video– but the referee’s statement in doling out the personal foul was evidence that he did strike Seymour. Several players (including Ziggy Hood and Nick Eason) are even seen coming off the sidelines.

I guess starting an anti-Ben rumour would always be good for ratings….but clearly out of line here given the video evidence to the contrary. I am shocked at Miller and Filliponi’s carelessness in this instance– as they are usually pretty fair and accurate.
