Oakland Raider Richard Seymour Fined $25,000 For Hit On Big Ben

PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) — The player who punched Ben Roethlisberger is going to have to pay up.

Oakland Raiders defensive lineman Richard Seymour was fined $25,000 for unnecessary roughness.

The hit happened in the second quarter after the Steelers made it 21-3. Roethlisberger ran up behind Seymour while celebrating a touchdown pass. That’s when Seymour turned and hit him in the helmet.

Seymour is also possibly facing suspension because it was his third on-field incident within the last two seasons.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

wow…harrisons hit was a hit during a play..and he was charged was 75,000…cheap shot after the whistle only gets 25,000 what a waste of time…

  2. Keith says:

This is just another sign that the NFL is out to punish the Steelers. First fining James Harrison a total of $100,000 for so called “Illegal Hits” Then Fining Farrior or another so called “Illegal Hit” during the patriots game yet the player the delivered the helmet to helmet hit agaist Hines Ward that took him out of the same game was not fined.

Yesterday the officials seemed to be on mission to penaize the Steelers and attempt to help the Raiders try to win the game. I was at the game and found the officiating in Sundays game to be the worst I have EVER seen in over 35 years of watching football.

Now a blatant punch in the face of Rothlisberger by Richard Seymour. Which got him physically ejected from the game. Is met with a slap on the wrist fine of $25,000?

What I take from this is 2 things. The President of the NFL is gunning for the steelers. And it is a bigger crime to hit a quarter back with a clean tackle during game play. Then to blatantly punch an opposing quarterback in the face outside of game play.

If Rodger Goodell want to be fair and make the NFL less violent and safer for the players then he should have fined Seymour a minimum fine of $100,000 and suspend him for 3 games.

Come to think of it Goodell has been gunning for the Steelers ever since the rape accusations against Big Ben. Don’t know what Goodell’s problem is with the Steelers but its obvious he is doing everything he can to punish them. While letting other teams and players get away with murder.

    1. Christine says:

I couldnt agree with you more, Keith! You see it the way i do. The Steelers are being scrutinized for everything they do while others are ignored.

    2. Ham says:

How is an open handed slap considered a punch? At least hockey is still a manly sport…

      1. Renee Hayes says:

Ham…you can quit watching football whenever you would like like:) That hit was totally uncalled for an deserved to be puniched by more than ejection and a $25,000 fine. Hockey has always taught children unsportsmanlike conduct. IPersonally, I consider it more like the WWF…lol. Our Steelers are being targeted!

  3. Heather D says:

I’m not a football fan at all. I only watch it when I’m out of anything else to do and my husband has it on…I watched a wee bit of yesterday’s game and by the 2nd quarter I had to ask my husband why in the world the Steelers were getting penalized so much when I don’t see them doing anything else different than any other team. And I saw that one Steeler who got penalized for hitting another with his helmet (helmet/helmet contact) but he hit him in the shoulder. Even I could tell that. It’s a shame that our team is being punished for something. Like I said, I’m not a big fan and don’t care either way who wins what…but I sincerely hope that they go to the Super Bowl and win this year just to say Eff you to whomever it is who has it out for them.

    1. jerry says:

Excuse me Heather. I do believe other players in the NFL are being fined. The Steelers are not the only team in the NFL.

      1. Rae says:

Jerry: $25,000 for intentionally hitting a QB???? Okay then… I guess Harrison should just earn those fines an start slapping QB’s in the last 2 minutes of the game???? Grow up!

  4. richardw says:

The way they are trying to change this game makes me sick. I have been a lifelong football fan and couldn’t even finish watching that game yesterday. Goodell is going to be the downfall of the NFL.

  5. Ken says:

C’mon Goodell put your BIG BOYpants on and lets be fair! You sure aren’t showing it right now!

  6. Rich99 says:

In another 10 yyears the NFL will read the NTFL (National Touch Football League

    1. Keith says:

I think you mean the (No Touch Football League)

  7. Steeler Chick says:

That’s it? wow! It somehow doesn’t surprise me though

  8. Jerry says:

James Harrison took a flying leap into the quarterback. That is not tackling, that is a vicious hit.

    1. Keith says:

That is football Jerry, its a full contact sport, its not flag football. I’ve seen quarterbacks take much harder and more vicious hits than the one James Harrison delivered and no fines were handed out.

  9. Jerry says:

I loved when Roethlisberger went down, even though it was only a open hand slap by Seymour. II think $25,000 is to excessive for a little slap. I can’t stand Worthlisberger.

    1. Ahole says:

      F U Jerry

    2. greenakers says:

Jerry your being a hated. Fact is Seymore hit after the whistle. He should be punished HARSHLY

  10. Alex says:

    Roger Goodell is GARBAGE.
Go sign my petition to fix the NFL.

  11. Donna D. says:

Maybe the girl from Ga. Had something to do w/ that… LMAO….. Good for him… JERK…

    1. Marty says:

The girl from Georgia was just out for money!

The commisioner is just a dope that belongs in Polk Center in Franklin, PA

    2. Rae says:

Donna: This is about following rules set up by the NFL and unjust actions of Roger Goodell. Leave foolishness out of football comments and go watch a soap opra!

  12. Jerome Faye says:

this is just more BS from Goodell and the NFL. this is not Seymours first time for doing something like this.

    1. Marty says:

Seymours a douce, just like Brady and the New England organization!

  13. John Arnett says:

jerry has no idea what a good QB is and it is excessive what seymour did i guess u need to pull ur head out of ur ass so u can see some daylight!!!!!!!!!it just shows the nfl is targeting the steelers and it is a bunch of BS!!!ur just mad u dont have a QB that good!!!!!!

  14. Eric says:

Marty, you are not very smart and have nothing else better to do!

Mayor Luke is one of the finest mayors in America, so go work for your little local newstation. If you were so big, then you would work for a national newstation like CNN or MSNBC.

    1. Jack says:

      Isn’t this a football question!

What does the Mayor Steelerstahl have to do with a posting about Richard Seymour?

I am an educated person and thank god I live in Virginia so I don’t have to listen to your nonsense!

    2. Keith says:

Ravenstall is a joke, he has no idea what he’s doing and driving this city into the ground with all his “Progressive” Ideas. That being said, what does this have to do with football, the steelers, the fine, rothlisberger, seymour, or anything else in this article?

  15. Ron Cooke says:

If the NFL keeps it up, in several years the Steelers will be playing flag football

  16. Christel says:

I am starting to get really get upset with Mr Rooney , it seems the owners allow this to go on…. it’s time to stop buying their tickets and NFL products until they make some changes

  17. Mike S. says:

I wonder if the result would gave been the same if it were golden boy Brady instead of Ben. Imagine the weeping and wailing from the patriots fans. National take is “so what it’s just Ben.”. Fallout from the Georgia incident. Too bad NFL is showing a huge bias here.

  18. Ralph & Jeneane says:

The NFL Commisioner should have fined Richard Seymour a $100,000 plus community service for his punch on Big Ben no excuse for that and maybe the Oakland Raiders fans see it as a friendly punch as it were but Steeler fans see it as a crude and hatred hit. Again they should suspend Richard Seymour for the rest of the football season.

  19. rick says:

if this had happened to manning or brady, there would have been a suspension and a huge fine. Goddell has just opened pandoras box and sent a message out to the players that you can go punch and maybe knock a qb out of the game, and get a slap on the wrist. If the NFL dishes out any fines to the steeler players for their legal hits against oakland, you will start to see players retire from the game after this season so they can get out with some dignity left and being able to say they palyed a mans game. women will be playing in the NFL soon if this pattern continues.

  20. Rae says:

I think Ben should press charges in a REAL court of LAW!!!!!! Any judge who see’s this action is sure to throw Seymour in jail for a while!!!!!

  21. John Arnett says:

yea this is a outrage!!25000 thats it i thought the nfl was cracking down on illeagel hits if that wasent one i dont know what one is!1!!!

  22. fred perkins says:

i think this punk jane seemore would not have hit ben if he was michael vick or donavan mcnabb, this clown makes 12 million a year for being stupid and colored blind, go back to oakland punk

  23. fred perkins says:

if jane seymore had hit brady or romo, neither one of them would have got off the grass, they should make you walk back to oakland and learn how to slap harder
