PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – One of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ top prospects has been named to a prestigious team.

Former first-round pick Simon Despres has been named to Team Canada’s roster for the upcoming 2011 World Junior Championships. This tournament will take place Dec. 26 to Jan. 5 in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Penguins drafted Despres in the first round of the 2009 NHL Draft (30th overall).

The 19-year-old, who is currently playing for the Saint John Sea Dogs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, has 26 points (9 goals and 17 assists) and a plus-19 rating through 22 games.

Despres is expected to compete for a spot on the Penguins’ defense next season.
