Pedestrian Critically Injured In Hit & Run Accident

ROSS TOWNSHIP (KDKA) – Authorities continue to search for the driver in a hit-and-run accident in Ross Township Tuesday evening that left a woman critically injured.

According to police, the victim was at the curb around 7 p.m. on Hillendale Road near Rochester Road when she was struck.

Police say the accident happened on a section of the roadway with a steep incline.

The woman has been identified as Mary Ann Hussar. Officials say she is in her 60s.

Authorities report that Hussar told her husband she heard the car before seeing it.

“I heard the fear in her voice, and so I opened the garage door,” said Mark Schrankel, a neighbor who helped Hussar after the accident. “I was in my driveway and said, ‘Is there something wrong?’ And she said, ‘I’ve been hit.’”

Hussar suffered serious injuries and was taken to Allegheny General Hospital. She remains in intensive care with a gash to the head and broken bones. She is listed in critical but stable condition.

Police believe the car involved is a smaller vehicle with a loud exhaust and damage to the front end on the driver’s side.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Ross Police Department at (412)-931-9070.

this is about a person that passed another car. this is my mother. she is now in a hospital bed in icu thanks to this person. she was taking her garbage out. This is a quiet residential neighborhood that so many use as a cut thru to get to 19 or reverse to rochester. people have no respect anymore. there is a 25mph posted speed limit. SERIOUSLY, THE PERSON THAT DID THIS TO MY MOTHER, YOU NEED TO TURN YOURSELF IN. MY MOM HAS CHILDREN, GRANDCHILDREN, FAMILY AND FRIENDS THAT LOVE HER. YOU ARE A COWARD!!!

Yes I agree the only reason they run is because of legal issues, i am so sorry to hear this my daughter and son in law live on Polish hill their car and the neighbors car was pushed up to 4 ft to the steps of the apt at 2am monday morning they cant find the driver and the ins they had does not cover it! they are so over whelmed by this. The vehicle discription was a silver vehicle. I just thank God they were not in it!So cowardly. I pray for your mom God bewith her.

      1. chris says:

        thank you

  2. Constance says:

I will pray for your mom’s recovery, I hope the person responsible either turns himself in or gets caught. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Such a sad tragic event that could and should have been avoided.

    1. Chris Hussar says:

      Thank you Constance

  3. Christie says:

I am praying for you and your family! I am sorry this has happened and I am also praying that they catch this person or someone comes forward!!!

  5. Terrie says:

I also live on Hillendale Road. There are signs posted on Hillendale Road – that this road is not to be used as a short-cut. Our Ross Township needs to do something about this problem. I am praying that Chris’ Mother recovers and the person that hit her turns themselves in.

    1. Scott says:

Ross Township is doing something. It’s voting to eliminate police officers so now we’ll never see them patrolling our streets. I say it’s time for change. Out with the old and in with the new. If we can vote out 6 or 7 of them then maybe we’ll see change and responsibility. Stanko, Mazur, Kinross, Montgomery, O’Brien, Ferraro, DeMarco, Eyster, Mikec….time to wake up or resign. We need our neighborhoods to be safe regardless of your need to retain your prized commissioners seat. I’ve lived here for almost 50 years and will no longer stand for your incompetance.

    2. Chris Hussar says:

thank you Terrie…. i grew up on this street and i think it’s about time for some speed bumps… they are still flying up and down the street since this has happened.

  6. Crystal Hilbert says:

Considering the car already had front end damage? Yeah, this person probably hits a lot of things and doesn’t care.

It’s really terrible about your mom, but I think the best you can hope for is someone finding the guy. Doesn’t sound like he’ll turn himself in.

  7. Scott says:

And Ross Township wants to cut our police department. What are our Commissinoers thinking????? These guys are already overworked, not to mention we have one of the best police departments around. We all need to tell them what we think about this.

  8. Danielle says:

There are bank robberies every week, home invasion robberies, people taking stuff out of cars, and drunk drivers every week on the news in Ross. How can they justify doing that???? That’s just stupid. I’ll def tell Council Mazer what I think about this. Maybe we need some new council people. I wish I wasn’t in college or I’d run against her.

  9. Brittany Hussar says:

Crystal, the car didn’t already have damage to the car… it says in the article that there should be damage to the car due to the imapact of them hitting my Nana

  10. RossRenegade says:

If you want to get more involved to persuade the Ross Township Commissioners to make our Township roads safer, you should check out the Ross Township Good Government Committee on Facebook or follow the RossRenegade on Twitter.

  11. Ron Reidell says:

Is the Facebook page any easier than directly contacting our commisioners? I drive past this street as a resident and suffice it to say that the tragedy here creates another issue entirely. The P.O.S. that drove the car needs to turn him or her self in. There is no way that an accident like this happens and you cannot see the person or where you drove. This is terrible and hope that this woman recovers fully and justice served. God Bless your family and we all pray for your family and your Mom’s recovery!!

    1. Chris Hussar says:

      thank you Ron

  12. Steve says:

Chris and Dan, I am so sorry to hear about your mom. Hopefully the person who did this will have a conscience and turn themselves in. Prayers are flying for you and your family!

    1. Chris Hussar says:

      Thank you STEVE….

  13. Chris Hussar says:

Thank you everyone for your thoughts and prayers. I know words cannot express how overwhelmed we are with everyone’s response. I know my mom’s injuries will heal but the anger inside of her family and herself will not until this person is found. I want this person to know, that you didn’t hit a garbage can, a turkey or any type of animal, you hit a human being!!!! You hit a woman that has survived breast cancer and lives every day of her life with rheumatoid arthritis. You left her lying in the street and didn’t take the time to look back. How could you just drive away? I want you to put yourself in my shoes, hell i want you to put yourself in my mom’s shoes and try to understand our anger. I pray that you come forward to face your penalty and to put our anger at rest.

I am very thankful to the neighbor that heard her pleas and the fact that she wasn’t home alone. It was below 20degrees that night !!!! The longer this goes on without this person coming forward the greater the chance they may never come forward or be found. The anger inside however will never go, and that is something that we as a family should not have to deal with. I thank Ross Police for all they are doing at this time. They are following up on every lead. I want to thank all of you that keep this going on facebook and by word of mouth. I want every one of you and say THANK YOU!!!! Please keep this going

    1. chris says:

      HUG every one of you

  14. Andy says:

    To the Hussar family,

I am sorry to hear about the accident involving Mrs. Hussar. I hope they find the person that caused this and bring them to justice. I grew up on Hillendale and am well aware of the amount of traffic and the excessive speeding on that street. I have notified my parents and friends on Facebook that live in the neighborhood to keep their eye out for the car. I hope Mrs. Hussar has a speedy and full recovery.

    1. Chris Hussar says:

      thanks Andy…

  15. Rob says:

Ross Twp has very little regard for public safety. Street lighting is minimal, road and intersection design is pathetic, there are virtually no sidewalks anywhere, the police force is amateur and unprofessional, management of the 8 (yes, 8!) fire departments is non existent, they want to cut funding to EMS, the list goes on.

To Mrs.Hussar, get well soon. I hope something good can happen out of this so your misfortune is not in vain.

  16. jen says:

Chris, I don’t know you, but I stumbled across this news story and I just wanted to say I hope your mom has a speedy recovery. I will be keeping you & her in my thoughts and prayers!
