Mother, Son Injured In Masontown Standoff

MASONTOWN (KDKA) - Police in Fayette County are trying to determine what sparked a standoff yesterday afternoon that left two people critically injured with gunshot wounds.

According to officials, the SWAT team and police officers were called to a home in Masontown on Water Street around 1 p.m. on Wednesday.

A man was reportedly holding his mother hostage inside an apartment. The man allegedly shot his mother and then himself.

They have been identified as Elaine Veres, 54, and Shawn Veres, 31.

State Police Trooper Stefanie Plume said that emergency dispatchers got a call from Elaine Veres' daughter, Lauren.

Samantha Phillips lives in the apartment next door and described the incident as scary.  She could hear the two arguing, but could not discern what the argument was about.

Police set up a perimeter around the house and started a dialogue before hearing gunshots.

No shots were fired at or by police during the incident.

Both victims are listed in critical condition at Ruby Memorial Hospital.

According to a local police officer, the family had just begun the process of moving into the apartment.

Police are not actively looking for any other suspects in this case. However, they do want to speak with friends and family members about what may have led to the incident.
