Pirates Designate Martinez To Make Room For Correia

PITTSURGH (KDKA/AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates have designated RHP Joe Martinez for assignment to make space on their roster for the newly-signed RHP Kevin Correia.

Martinez pitched in five games for the Pirates for a total of 8 2/3 innings. He gave up 11 hits, three earned runs and struck out six in those appearances.

Before he was acquired by the Pirates in the Javier Lopez trade last season, Martinez pitched for the San Francisco Giants going 0-1 with a 4.91 ERA in four games.

Earlier this month, the Pirates signed Correia to a two-year contract worth approximately $8 million.

Correia went 10-10 with a 5.40 earned-run average in 28 games last season for the San Diego Padres. He pitched a total of 198 innings in 2009, also with the Padres, and won a career-best 12 games while posting a 3.91 ERA.

The Pirates also have invited non-roster pitchers Rudy Owens, Justin Wilson and Tyler Yates and first baseman Jeff Clement to Major League spring training.
