Man Punches Port Authority Bus, Gets Run Over

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Witnesses say a combination of booze and anger led to a bizarre accident in downtown Pittsburgh Wednesday afternoon.

A man was punching a Port Authority bus and attempted to get on it before being hit by the bus.

The accident happened in the middle of downtown Pittsburgh near the intersection of Liberty and Wood just before rush hour.

Witnesses say the young man was with a woman trying to catch a bus that was making a turn.

Security guard Ronald Newman saw the whole thing and said the man was arguing with the woman and had a belligerent attitude.

"He was in a very foul mood and this bus right here as it was turning, he jumped in front of the bus, started shouting obscenities at the bus driver," he described.

The witness says when the bus didn't stop, the man took more aggressive action.

"As the bus was turning, he decided to take it upon himself to go in the middle of the street with the stroller, start punching the bus, shoulder-charging the bus," Newman said. "I saw the whole thing."

"Next thing I know the stroller gets crunched under the wheel and I guess he got hit by the rear wheel because he went down like a sack of potatoes," Newman said.

A Port Authority spokesman said the man is hospitalized, but his injuries are not life-threatening.

The accident remains under investigation by Port Authority police.
