Father Arraigned On Charges In Connection With Son’s Death

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A local police officer was arraigned on charges in connection with the death of his young son, who allegedly shot himself with his father’s service weapon.

John Thompson was arraigned via video link at Pittsburgh Municipal Court on Wednesday.

He faces a count of involuntary manslaughter and counts of reckless endangerment.

The criminal complaint indicates Thompson left his gun unsecured in an unlocked closet on Nov 26.

According to investigators, Gavin Thompson was playing with his father’s police-issued weapon and accidentally shot himself in the face in Port Vue back in November.

Thompson’s preliminary hearing is set for Jan. 28.

He is on paid administrative leave from the Port Vue Police Department and no longer works for the Liberty Boro Police Department.
