Neighbors Upset By Deaths Of Boy, 2 Women In New Castle

NEW CASTLE (KDKA) - Police in New Castle say the deaths of three family members on the south side of the city, appear to be a double murder-suicide, but their investigation continues.

The bodies of a 12-year-old boy, his 40-year-old mother and his grandmother were found in their home Friday afternoon.

"I think it's really, really sad," said neighbor Kira Walthall.

Walthall expressed her reaction to the news, "floored, unbelievable. I just couldn't get over it. It's unexpected."

Police arrived at the home after another neighbor called to report that the family's cat had come over for food.

The chief of police says it's believed the bodies had been inside for several days. Each had a single gunshot wound to the head. There was no sign anyone tried to break in, and a handgun was found.

The coroner has yet to release the names of the people involved, but neighbors know them. Fr. John Petrarulo, at St. Vitus School, also knew the family.

"It's really, really a tragedy," he said. "I thought she was a beautiful woman, and her mother, I knew her mother very well. She was a very nice lady."

Police say the boy and his grandmother were found in an upstairs bedroom. The 40-year-old was found downstairs.
