Baby's Death In Ligonier Considered Suspicious

LIGONIER (KDKA) -- Ligonier Township police are investigating the death of a 7-month-old baby boy.

The baby was found dead inside a mobile home on Rocky Meadow Lane Wednesday. Matthew Bennett and Jessica Mort, both 21, are the parents of the baby.

"It was found by the father and the baby was reported to be in the crib this morning," Ligonier Township Police Chief Michael Matrunics said. "I'm trying to determine more details of that right now, but that's what was reported to me at this time."

Police say the child didn't have any known medical conditions and there was no clear cause of death. Still, the death is being called suspicious.

"Anytime you have a child that's obviously a deceased child at a home where maybe, possible medical conditions aren't really in front of you or have suffered from medical conditions, you have to look at everything and that's what we're doing right now," Matrunics said. "We don't really have much right now – we're just trying to gather."

Police are interviewing members of the family and are also planning to execute a search warrant at the home.

County detectives and the Westmoreland County District Attorney's office have been called in to assist with the investigation.
