PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — In this region, three major companies deliver electricity to residential homes – Duquesne Light, Allegheny Power and Penn Power.
That won’t change.
But while Duquesne Light or one of the others continues to be your electric company, you can now choose from a list of electricity suppliers offering electricity at lower rates.
Already, more than 850,000 Pennsylvanians have made a choice and the PUC has a Web site (PA Power Switch) that lets you pick your utility and compare the price of alternative electricity generators.
But, the posted price is not everything, says Dan Donovan of Dominion Energy Solutions. Some rates are variable while others are fixed.
“You have to decide for yourself if you want a fixed offer or a variable offer,” he said. “Currently, with low rates, you’re probably better off with a fixed offer.”
But check out the length of the fixed price offer. It could be six months, one year or two years. Also, find out of there is any cancellation fee if you want to switch to a lower-priced alternative next year.
The Office of Consumer Advocate has another helpful website and 800-number (800-684-6560) worth reviewing. But just don’t rely on the posted terms – call around.
“If you’re an existing customer, give us a call,” Donovan said. “We might have a better offer for you. Offers change all the time. We’re competitive. That’s what this whole business is about.”
