Suspect Sought In Fatal Hill District Shooting

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Police are searching for suspects following a deadly shooting in broad daylight Saturday afternoon in the Hill District.

Authorities have identified the victim as 21-year-old Dane Smith Jr. from the East Hills. Officials say he was found lying on a sidewalk with a gunshot wound to the head.

The initial call about the incident came into 911 just before 2:20 p.m.

According to investigators, the victim was reportedly chased by another man with a sawed off shotgun along Reed Street to Centre Avenue. Officials say the victim was shot several times and the suspect got away after running into a wooded area.

"The male with the shotgun fired at the male who was running several times and struck the victim in the head and fled from the scene," said Cmdr. Thomas Stangrecki, of the Pittsburgh Police.

The victim was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

"The victim was taken to Mercy Hospital in critical condition with an obvious gunshot wound to his head and unfortunately died at the hospital," said Cmdr. Stangrecki. "He's identified as a 21-year-old male. We're not releasing his name at this time."

Officials have not released a motive in the shooting and they are still searching for the suspect.

Anyone with information on the case is being urged to contact the Pittsburgh Police.
