FRAZER (KDKA) – The Hallmark Gold Crown store at the Galleria at Pittsburgh Mills is closed today after a small fire early Saturday morning.

According to our news partners at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the fire started in a cabinet behind the cash register around 1 a.m.

Most of the damaged suffered by the store was caused by the store’s sprinkler system.

The fire marshal has been called to investigate.

The rest of the mall is open.

The local paper reports that the fire started around the cash register. I think that is more of the story. Why would there be a small fire around 1am when the workers should have been out of there several hours earlier. It sounds fishy to me.

Sprinklers work but only when properly maintained and I can tell you from experience many are not. They require regular inspections ,flushing s and making sure corrosion is not building in the pipes etc.

that mall is only 10 or so years old they had a fire in the downtown Kaufman’s/Macy in a window and the sprinklers did not come on.about 5 years ago
