Pittsburgh Power Set To Open Season

PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) — It's the start of a new football season tonight as the Pittsburgh Power make their debut at the CONSOL Energy Center.

The Power will open the Arena Football League season against the Philadelphia Soul, who are returning to the league after a two-year hiatus.

Both teams will be playing in the American Conference's East Division along with the Cleveland Gladiators and Milwaukee Mustangs.

AFL veteran Bernard Morris will be the starting quarterback for the Power and will be backed up by Gibsonia native Kevin McCabe and former Nittany Lion Anthony Morelli. Last season, Morris threw for 567 yards and eight touchdowns for the Jacksonville Sharks.

Speaking to the media before Friday night's opening game, Power co-owner and former Steelers wide receiver Lynn Swann said "as most people know, in Pittsburgh, black and gold means a lot, and the Pittsburgh Power will be in black and gold.

"It's my expectation to live up to the reputation that the sports franchises have in Pittsburgh," he said. "We will compete and we will compete hard."

Swann and the Power signed a six-year lease with the Penguins to play at the CONSOL Energy Center.
