Westmoreland County Officials Revise Tornado Damage Estimates

GREENSBURG (KDKA) -- Westmoreland County officials have revised their damage estimates from the tornado that struck dozens of homes last week.

They spent the weekend visiting each home with damage to compile a final report for the state.

They found that nine homes were destroyed, meaning they need to be rebuilt from the ground up; 13 with major damage; 29 with minor damage and 94 others were affected by the storm.

The categories are based on Federal Emergency Management Agency guidelines.

County officials don't anticipate state disaster declaration because 99 percent of damage will be covered by insurance, so out-of-pocket losses won't be nearly as high as expected from looking at the damage.

The county is making arrangements to help the small number of uninsured storm victims.
