4 Injured After Stairs Collapse In South Connellsville

SOUTH CONNELLSVILLE (KDKA) -- One woman was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital and three others were hurt on Thursday after a wooden staircase collapsed in Fayette County.

The flight of stairs was the only way to access the second floor apartment of a duplex on West Gibson Avenue.

A woman, her two adult daughters and her 2-year-old grandson were walking up the steps when they suddenly collapsed.

Former tenants and people close to the landlord say they have been speaking out about the safety hazard for years.

Charlie Williams, the property owner, disagreed.

"Went up and down them every day – didn't bother me," he said.

Williams told KDKA-TV he'll fix the steps when the insurance company gets involved.

The woman who was taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital had surgery. The other victims had cuts and bruises.

The municipality is going to send a code enforcement officer back to the scene today to determine if any action needs to be taken against the owner.
