Sharpsburg Fire Leaves 2 Dead

By: Heather Abraham

SHARPSBURG (KDKA) – Two people died in a house fire early Saturday morning in Sharpsburg.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that one of the victims is 23-year-old Brittany Aquino.

Matthew Sutton, 24, of Plum, was also killed in the fire.

The investigation into what caused the fire is ongoing, but the Sharpsburg Volunteer Fire Department said it was contained to the third floor.

It started around 1 a.m. and fire crews were able to quickly put it out.

Several of the volunteer firefighters, including the chief, live within walking distance to the house and were able to quickly respond.

KDKA-TV’s Heather Abraham has learned that one of the neighbors, also a volunteer, made the 911 call.

Aquino’s mother, Belinda, also lives in the home, but was able to get out safely.

Neighbors close to Brittany Aquino said she has two young children, ages 2 and 4, who stay mostly with their father at his home.

The children were not with Brittany when the fire broke out.

Friends also said she was currently in school studying to be a veterinarian.

Brittnay was a beautiful soul, with a bright future ahead of her, she will be sadly missed by her children, family and friends, the couple of times that i spoke with her she seemed determined to save all the whales and help whatever animals she could by becoming a Vetrinarian, she would have been great at that, may she “REST IN PEACE”

  4. Christon and Jeremy says:

Thank you Samantha for pointing out that the kids were ALWAYS with their mother. It anonoys me that the media reports that the kids just visited her. That simply was not the case. She was a great mother and a great friend. She will truely be missed. RIP Brit Brit.

  5. Jaime Aquino says:

There nothin more hurtful and disrespectful two grieving parents then an irresponsible journalist writing about a tragedy with in accurate information. It appears to me as the father of Brittany Aquino that this person writing this never left his or her cubicle to investigate this story to get accurate information. Shame on CBS and there affiliates for allowing such hurtful and inaccurate comments about the death of my daughter and the well being of my grand children. My name is Jaime Aquino my phone number is 904 382 1236, I will be arriving in Pittsburgh in approximately an hour and a half and will welcome the call and maybe you can explain to me what sources you used to write this distasteful article.

  6. Keri aquino says:

That is just irresponsible reporting to say that they mostly stayed with their dad. My sister was a great mother who lived with and took care of her kids everyday. Maybe you try more accurate reporting bef ore running your news story.

  7. Jaime Aquino Jr. says:

How inaccurate this article is. They didn’t even get the ages of my niece and nephew correct. Wow!! Good investigating this reporter did. Why don’t you make sure you get the story straight before you go putting this up on the Internet, and whoever said the kids stay with the father mostly obviously doesn’t know my sister.

  8. Mike says:

Not only is the article horribly written, but the link the fire department website is for the Sharpsburg, NC fire department. Good job KDKA!!! My condolences to the Aquino family.

  9. Diania Whitehead says:

As a neighbor of Brittany and her family, I completely agree with Brittany’s father and siblings, that this article is badly written and false information. Brittany was a wonderful mother to her kids. ALWAYS had her kids with her. To walk up my side walk and see those two beautiful children playing in the back yard. I hope the day I have my baby I will be a loving and caring mother for my child as Brittany was for her children. May her soul rest in peace now.
