UNITY TOWNSHIP (KDKA) — State police are investigating a death at a local nursing home.

Janice Schmidt, 74, lived at Mountainview Specialty Care Center in Unity Township for about nine years after suffering a stroke.

She died around 11 p.m. Monday at Latrobe Hospital.

Investigators say the woman died from cardiac arrhythmia as a result of bruising to her torso. They do not know if the bruising was an accident or intentional.

State police are talking to people at the care center.

“It’s in our best interest if we’re going to be real sensitive when it comes to someone dying, that we interview everyone that was around this person or had the potential to be around this person especially in the last few days,” State Trooper Steven Limani said. “And that could be anywhere from the vendors to the visitors to other patients and the workers there.”

No manner of death has been determined.

State records show Mountainview Specialty Care passed its most recent state inspection.
