PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The awards keep coming for the city of Pittsburgh.
The latest honor is fitting considering Mother’s Day is being celebrated on Sunday.
According to the real-estate company, Zillow, Pittsburgh is one of the top 10 cities for single mothers to live.
Pittsburgh ranked eighth on the list that was based on five main factors: affordability (price-to-income-ratio), women’s annual earnings as a percentage of men’s earnings, public education spending per student, transportation and FBI violent crime rates.
The complete top 10 is:
- No. 1 – Rochester, N.Y.
- No. 2 – Port St. Lucie, Fla.
- No. 3 – Bakersfield, Calif.
- No. 4 – Ann Arbor, Mich.
- No. 5 – Fort Myers, Fla.
- No. 6 – Fresno, Calif.
- No. 7 – Green Bay, Wis.
- No. 8 – Pittsburgh
- No. 9 – Lincoln, Neb.
- No. 10 – Des Moines, Iowa
Also just in time for Mother’s Day, the website The Daily Beast has ranked “America’s 100 Best – And Worst – Cities for Moms” for the second consecutive year.
Pittsburgh comes in at second place on that list, second to Tampa, Fla.
The ranking is based on five categories, which show the quality of life for moms living in that particular area.
See the full rankings at this link.
Here are the top 5 cities:
- Tampa, Fla.
- Pittsburgh
- Cincinnati, Ohio
- Seattle, Wash.

Why is this considered to be an award? What is so honorable and noreworthy about being a single mom?
May 7, 2011 at 12:22 pm
wow, I thought this article was simply about the 5 main factors affecting moms that happen to be single…..
“Why is this considered to be an award?” , yeah, single moms should have an awful quality of life right? Cause that’s what they deserve right? Pittsburgh having affordable housing, women making comparative pay, good education & transportation, and a low crime rate – and how that makes for decent living conditions for moms that are single – that’s just wrong! Makes you wish things were bad around here, so these moms would not have it so easy, huh.
You should have down what you name is, and just stayed QUIET-MANN

Do we have the best welfare??

Hey Dingbats!! It means childcare and the job situation is better so single moms can better care for their kids

glad someone else was smart enough to understand what they were saying!
May 7, 2011 at 1:02 pm
they aren’t saying we have more single moms just that this is a good place for children (because of the amount of money spent on education, low crime etc and a good place for women b/c of the rate they can earn here)

Women are not always single mothers by choice. I am a widow anad have raised 4 sons as a single mother due to death, Pittsburgh does have more jobs and belive it or not is safer than other cities. I moved back home from the Cleveland area because my home was robbed 3 times in one year. Not all single mome don’t know who the daddy is. Men are abusive to them and their children. If a man would step up and help the mother instead of beating on her physicaly and verbuly there might not be so many single mothers.

Dubious honor at best. Most unwed mothers is hardly a distinction worth touting.

If I hear ‘my welfare card don’t swipe’ one more time I’ll scream, if you can get your hair and nails done you can get a job.
Don’t expect your boyfriend or hook-up to buy something for Mothers Day if he is not the father of your kid because it’s not fair.

LMAO most of yall are not getting the whole point of the award smh…me personally hate this city and most of the people in it. Just reading these comments shows how most of yall dont know ish.

I was at the grocery store and the girls came in with the wigs, the claws, the baby in the stoller and one in the oven. They talk loud like animals but when it comes time to pay the bill their boyfriends chest deflates, he looks at the floor and moves the end of the line.
She pulls out the foodsamp card and say’s ‘you have to key it in because it don’t swipe’ then looks at the next woman like she’s a bum because she is paying cash. And people wonder why Homewood is down to 6,600 people, the Hill district residents are being moved out to make way for the working class. Yes Destiny we are so jealous of bums on welfare and lazy welfare back to work moms that complain that they have to get up a 6am for a shift. In my opinion Rashad Byrdsongs community empowement project is another government scam that means nothing and B-PEP is a joke stop waiting for a hand out and help yourself.

Maybe if you spoke proper English and talked like you weren’t on welfare, we would take your comment to heart.
