$8K Stolen From Ford City Volunteer Fire Department

FORD CITY (KDKA) -- Officials say $8,000 was stolen from the volunteer fire department in Ford City, Armstrong County, and one of their own is facing charges.

Christopher Zionkowski, 22, of Ford City, was the manager for Ford City Hose Company No. 1's activities fund and is accused of stealing the money to pay his bills.

Members of the fire department who work hard to raise the money through fundraisers such as breakfasts and chicken dinners, feel betrayed.

"It's like a kick in the shin," said Chief Scott Gaiser.

The department realized the theft after a check to pay for a new squad truck bounced.

They say Zionkowski had been involved with the department for about four years and that he was very dedicated.

"He was here for every call, every function," said Assistant Chief Ray Klukan. "I just couldn't believe it."

"You work as you can to raise that money and then to have something happen to it – it just takes your breath away," said Gaiser.
