1 Injured In Beaver Co. Fire

NEW SEWICKLEY TOWNSHIP (KDKA) – One person was injured after a fire destroyed a Beaver County home Monday morning.

According to officials at the scene, the fire started in the 400-block of Big Knob Road in New Sewickley around 2 a.m.

"I saw flames as high as the trees that surround this home and it was really scary," Hazel Withers, a neighbor, said.

Alice Wilson, 76, was flown to UPMC Mercy Hospital to be treated for burns. She was last listed in serious condition.

Four others were able to get out of the home safely.

The initial 911 call said fire started in the basement, but the fire marshal has been called to the scene to help determine the cause.

Initial findings by fire marshals indicate the fire may have been started by careless smoking. Wilson used supplemental oxygen and those tanks were a contributing factor in the fire.

"When I got on scene, we probably had 30 to 40 foot flames through the roof," Big Knob Fire Department Assistant Chief John Murtha said.

It took firefighters about 45 minutes to bring it under control. One problem they encountered was finding water to fight the fire. The closest hydrant is two to three miles from the scene.
