Rick Santorum To Announce Run For President

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- After months of testing the waters, former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum, R-Pennsylvania, will announce that he is running for president.

He will make it official on June 6 at the Somerset County courthouse. It's the county where his grandfather immigrated.

Following a speech a few weeks ago to the National Rifle Association, Santorum emphasized his strong economic and social conservative roots.

"Moral issues are important because without a society that has a solid foundational moral structure, the possibility of lower taxes and limited government is impossible," Santorum said.

He says personal issues like traditional marriage, abortion and children having both moms and dads do matter.

"They may be personal issues, but they have a profound effect on society, and they will have a profound effect on the size and scope of government and the success of our economic and social future," Santorum said.

As for this state, Santorum says Pennsylvanians now realize he was right about many of his views.

"We have a case to make, and I've been blessed in the past with the good people of Pennsylvania giving me the opportunity to make that case and look at facts and elect me twice," he said. "And I consider that a good starting point."

What gives Santorum some hope is that, unlike last time where the winner of a particular state could take all the delegates from the state, in 2012 the Republicans will use proportional voting. That means as long as Santorum wins some votes, he's going to win some delegates.

Meantime, the Post-Gazette reports that Santorum is delinquent on property taxes for his Penn Hills home for unpaid 2009 property taxes.

The Santorums live in a larger home in northern Virginia, but have maintained the house in Penn Hills next to his parents.

This is not the first time a lien has been placed on that house.
