Kevin Correia: Pirates MVP?
Pittsburgh (KDKA)- When Pirates GM Neal Huntington signed Kevin Correia as a free agent over the winter, there's no way he envisioned getting the results he's gotten from the right-hander.
Corriea picked up his seventh win of the 2011 season yesterday leading the Pirates to a 4-2 win.
More importantly, Corriea performed like an ace and ended a Pirate losing streak. That's what staff aces are supposed to do.
Check out Corriea's numbers on the road this season:
Record: 6-1
Innings: 46
ERA: 2.35
Hits: 36
K's: 21
Here's a couple other interesting notes about Correia's accomplishments:
*He's the first Pirate since Jason Schmidt in 1998 to own or share the big league lead in wins on May 27th or later.
*Corriea is also the first Pirate pitcher with at least six road wins before June since 1929. Before Corriea future Hall-of-Famer Burleigh Grimes went 6-0 on the road in April and May in 1929...
There's been talk lately about who the Pirates All-Star rep will be this season. Neil Walker, Joel Hanrahan and Charlie Morton have been mentioned. My vote might go to Correia.
