A couple of Class AAAA baseball teams posted important wins last week, while two of the most talented softball pitchers in the WPIAL continued their dominance.

Pittsburgh (KDKA)- One of the Pirates young pitching prospects has been named South Atlantic Pitcher of the Week.

West Virginia’s Brandon Cumpton was named the South Atlantic League Pitcher-of-the-Week today for the week of May 23-29.

Cumpton has been charged with just five earned runs in 38.0 innings (1.18 ERA) while winning each of his last six starts.

His 1.18 ERA for the month of May ranks third in all of minor league baseball among pitchers with at least 35.0 innings behind Wisconsin’s Tyler Thornburg (0.51 ERA – 35.0ip/2er) and Richmond’s Eric Surkamp (0.89 ERA – 40.2ip/4er).

Cumpton, who was selected by the Pirates in the ninth round of last year’s draft, currently ranks tied for second in the South Atlantic League with six wins.
