1 Injured After Police Chase, Crash In West End

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- One person was seriously injured after a police pursuit ended with a vehicle going airborne and crashing in Pittsburgh's West End Sunday night.

The incident started around 10 p.m. near the West End Circle when police say the driver of a Jaguar apparently started to make an illegal turn. When officers tried to flag him down, the driver reportedly picked up speed and that's when the chase began.

When the car crashed near a BP gas station on Route 51, it reportedly went about 15 feet in the air and came down nose first. Skid marks could be seen on the road where the crash happened. The vehicle also hit a guardrail and dragged it during the chase.

The driver was taken to Allegheny General Hospital, where he was last reported to be in critical condition.

Police remained on the scene late Sunday night. Accident investigators were also called to the scene.

Authorities reportedly had to close both lanes of Route 51 for hours as they investigated the accident.
