Excavator Brings Down Pole, Knocks Out Power & Closes Road

SHALER TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- A downed utility pole and wires have closed a road and knocked power out to several residents today in Shaler Township.

According to Shaler Township police, Burchfield Road has been closed between College Park Road and Manuel Drive.

Police say an excavator doing some work in the area caused a utility pole and wires to fall onto Burchfield Road. The construction crew was replacing a storm sewer.

Authorities are recommending that local traffic use Victory Road as a detour. They are asking all other drivers in the area to avoid using Burchfield Road.

Police say the Duquesne Light is estimating power will be out for several hours. Officials say they believe power will be restored by 5 p.m.

Anyone living in the area with special medical needs that requires help should call the Shaler Township Municipal Office at 412-486-9700. They also say a cooling center may be opened if necessary.
