Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium Introduces Baby Sea Lion

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium is welcoming their newest addition to their animal family, a baby girl sea lion.

The sea lion was born last week and it has been spending time behind-the-scenes with 6-year-old mom Kallie. Now the pup has is ready to venture out and meet the zoo visitors.

This is the 3rd sea lion birth in three years at the zoo and Henry Kacprzyk of the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium says that it's really important. "The sea lion population in captivity is only declining and last year with our one pup, we had 20 percent of the sea lion births in the United States, that's pretty significant!"

Although the workers at the zoo were unsure of how Kallie would react to her pup, she has proved to be a very attentive and protective mother. When they took their first swim together she was right by the pup's side.

Kacprzyk also says that the birth of the little pup is very exciting because, "a lot of people come to the zoo and they just want to see animals doing something, and the sea lions are always active, but they're much more active when a pup is around."

Everyone, especially the children seemed to enjoy watching the sea lions sun bath and swim around. According to one of the visitors, "she's very cute and playful."
