Son Of Pittsburgh Police Officer Charged In Shooting

ROSTRAVER (KDKA) -- The KDKA Investigators have learned the man charged in a shooting is the son of Pittsburgh police officer.

It happened on Bedsworth Street in Rostraver around 12:30 a.m. Friday.

Police say the victim was riding in an SUV with 19-year-old Philip Mercurio and an 18-year-old woman.

Police say the victim was an acquaintance of Mercurio. When Mercurio tried to rob the victim of cash, it didn't go as planned and Mercurio allegedly shot at the victim twice at close range.

The bullets allegedly struck the victim in the head. He was able to get out of the SUV and go for help.

A person living nearby answered the door, called 911 and waited with the victim until an ambulance arrived.

The victim is expected to survive.

Mercurio took off in an SUV after putting a gun to a woman's head inside and forcing her to drive. She later identified Mercurio to police.

He was arrested this morning and is now facing attempted homicide, aggravated assault, robbery and other related charges. He is being held in the Westmoreland County Jail.
