Allegations Of Cover-Up At Allegheny County Jail

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- There are allegations of a cover-up at the Allegheny County Jail.

The KD Investigators have learned FBI agents confiscated computers and extensive documents and as KDKA Investigator Marty Griffin reports, there are now two grand juries looking into corruption allegations at two facilities.

The FBI is looking into an incident that happened at the Allegheny County Jail last April.

An inmate got into the duct work on the fifth floor and tried to escape that way.

KDKA Investigator Marty Griffin is told the inmate got caught at the employee entrance. That's where Griffin learned they nabbed him and he was beaten to the point his face looked like he'd been in a meat grinder, according to sources.

Sources tell Marty Griffin three high-ranking officers at the Allegheny County Jail are facing possible federal indictment for alleged participation and the subsequent cover-up.

"You cannot do that. I mean, we're a nation of laws we follow the law. In any case we'll do the same thing," Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala said in May.

Zappala could not talk about the details. However, his grand jury is investigating allegations of corruption at the State Correctional Institution in Pittsburgh. A number of jail guards are accused of pointing out sex offenders. Eight jail guards are under investigation for sex assault against inmates. At times they're accused of using broom handles in those assaults.

There is no comment from the FBI regarding their investigation. The county also had no comment, saying it's an ongoing investigation and they will cooperate completely with all authorities.
