News & Notes: Latest On Jagr, Chase D'Arnaud, College Football Recruits

By Mike Vukovcan

  • As you would expect on the eve of the NHL Draft, there's all kinds of news around the league. Let's start with Jaromir Jagr. ESPN and the Trib are both reporting he can't sign with any team until July 1. It's part of a free agency signing blackout period mandated by the collective bargaining agreement. There are other moves. The Flyers have traded Jeff Carter to the Blue Jackets for Jakub Voracek, the 8th overall pick, and a third-round pick. They are traded captain Mike Richards to Los Angeles for Brayden Schenn and Wayne Simmonds
  • As reported earlier, the Pirates are expected to call up Chase D'Arnaud for this weekend's series with the Red Sox. But that isn't the only move pending. It's expected they will promote Alex Presley Tuesday for their road series in Toronto when they can use a designated hitter.
  • D'Arnaud and outfielder Starling Marte have both been selected to the MLB Futures Game.
  • And finally, two PA linebackers are expected to announce their decisions tomorrow. The first is Brock Dean of Bishop McDevitt. He's a 6'1", 217-pound outside linebacker. Rivals.com lists him as a 3-star player with offers from Pitt, Maryland, and Temple. The other linebacker is Alkwan Williams from Johnstown. He's deciding between Pitt, Kent State, Temple, and Toledo.
