PennDOT To Begin Work On 2 Main Roadways

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The weather has played havoc with plans to begin a few major road projects, but PennDOT says it's now a go for work on two main roads in our area.

For the past few summers, PennDOT has focused its attention on the Parkway East, Parkway West and Parkway North; but now, it's time for work on other major roads.

That includes McKnight Road, where long-awaited, long-dreaded lane closures went into effect on Thursday night. As for this weekend, it's just the tip of the iceberg.

"There's no way they can do that and remove the lane restrictions every day from this morning into the fall," said Jim Struzzi, of PennDOT.

He's talking about the bridge that carries McKnight over Babcock Boulevard, just off of the Parkway North.

"The busiest time is the a.m. and p.m. peak rush hours; motorists should expect delays," said Struzzi. "If you have an alternate route, we suggest using it."

One road you just won't be able to use this weekend is Route 50. It's closed all weekend from Bower Hill Road to Prestley Road for reconstruction. You'll use I-79 as a detour

"That's going to have a big impact on people who live in this area, myself included, so I know what it will do," said Struzzi.

In the city, watch out for lane closures on the Smithfield Street Bridge. Resurfacing work means one lane each way on the outbound side all weekend long.

Forbes Avenue westbound around the crosstown is set to close through the weekend, and PennDOT's also planning a total shutdown of the Clairton-Glassport Bridge this weekend.
