Pittsburgh (KDKA)- The Pirates have gone to new territory for signing a free agent: Guatemala.
John Dreker of Pirateprospects.com is reporting that the Bucs have signed their first player from Guatemala, first baseman Dennis Hurtarte.
Dreker says that a number of teams watched Hurtarte during workouts in both the Dominican and in Florida.
Hurtarte has played five years in a baseball academy called Galvez Sobral in Guatemala and is someone scouts have known about for sometime.
Hurtarte is just the 3rd player from the country to sign a pro contract.
