Three Rivers Regatta Schedule Jam-Packed With Fun

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Get ready for a weekend packed full of fun and thrilling events at the 34th annual Three Rivers Regatta.

Beginning on July 2nd, the whole family can come to the Regatta to see everything from amazing sand sculptures, a circus, an eating contest and more.

All weekend long, the Regatta will play host to the 2011 North American Powerboat Championships.

Organizers say it's the largest venue on the Superleague circuit. The winner will claim the sport's most coveted title: North American Champion. The race consists of 24 drivers from both F-3 and F-2 classes. The finale for F-3 will take place on Sunday, July 3, and the F-2 will happen July 4.

Along with the boat races, Sandsational is set to dazzle Pittsburghers with their master sculpting skills. World champion sand sculptor Thomas Koet and other artists with Sandsational are working to create a record-setting sand sculpture at Point State Park.

Also new this year is Circus Orange. Organizers say the group brings special effects, dance and pyrotechnics. They will be performing all three nights of the Regatta.

Also joining in the fun this year is nine-time national free-ride and trials champion Mike Steidley. He is bringing his "Over the Mountain" bike stunt show to Point State Park on July 2, 3 and 4 at 1 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

Finally, what would a Fourth of July weekend be without a fantastic firework show?

The "Flashes of Freedom" Fireworks Fantasia show will light up the Pittsburgh skyline on July 4. New Castle-based Pyrotecnico is in charge of putting on this year's 24-minute show.

Organizers say it will pay tribute to the military, firefighters, police officers and emergency service workers.
