Zoo Kicks Off Family Week With Orangutan Beach Party

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Hang 10, dude! The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium is kicking off Eat 'n Park Family Week with fun beach party featuring the orangutans.

Zoo officials say Eat 'n Park Family Week kicks off on July 2 and runs through July 10. Different animals will be featured each day of the week and the fun includes games, crafts, a chance to talk to the animal experts and treats for the critters!

And the orangutans are only getting the week of fun started right!

According to orangutan keeper Michelle Farmerie: "The orangutans surf the waves in their plastic pool, which we fill with bubble bath. They wrap themselves up in beach towels, tie them around their shoulders and look like super heroes as they swing around their habitat."

Officials at the zoo say this provides the animals with the opportunity to learn how to use something new, while educating the keepers on animals reactions to new experiences.

"They are just like you and I. They are individuals and every day is different for them as they are experiencing new things in their environment, they react differently, different days, different things, depending on what kind of mood they are in," said Farmerie.
