Pittsburgh (KDKA)- Over the last couple of days, the Pirates front office and manager Clint Hurdle met to discuss the team’s plans for the upcoming MLB Trade Deadline.

For the first time since 1997, the Pirates appear to be buyers at the July 31st deadline.

Will GM Neal Huntington pull the trigger on a major deal?

Obviously, the Bucs will be looking to add some offense at either first base or the outfield.

I think it would be smart to also look to add another potential starter or some relief pitching.

The rotation has been great till this point but there are signs that guys like Charlie Morton and James McDonald could be wearing down.

When talking about the bullpen, I’d like to see some veteran insurance behind All-Star closer Joel Hanrahan.

Here are some players that I’d like to see Huntington target at the deadline.

Hitters:
Michael Cuddyer, 1B/OF (Minnesota Twins) .296, 13 HR, 40 RBI
Carlos Pena, 1B (Chicago Cubs) .225, 19 HR, 48 RBI
Aramis Ramirez, 3B (Chicago Cubs) .298, 14 HR, 49 RBI
Jeff Francoeur, OF (Kansas City Royals) .268, 12 HR, 55 RBI
Ryan Ludwick, OF (San Diego Padres) .246, 11 HR, 56 RBI
Josh Willingham, OF (Oakland A’s) .232, 10 HR, 42 RBI
Melky Cabrera, OF (Kansas City Royals) .286, 11 HR, 48 RBI

Pitchers:
Aaron Harang, SP (San Diego Padres) 7-2, 3.71 ERA
Jason Marquis, SP (Washington Nationals) 7-3, 4.11 ERA
Edwin Jackson, SP (Chicago White Sox) 5-7, 4.30 ERA
Matt Capps, RP (Minnesota Twins) 13 saves
Kerry Wood, RP (Chicago Cubs) 2.63 ERA
Jason Isringhausen, RP (NY Mets) 3.25 ERA
Mike Gonzalez, LHP (Baltimore Orioles)
George Sherrill, LHP (Los Angeles Dodgers)

Michael Cuddyer? Really? I’d love to see him in a Pirates uniform too but then again, Pujols wouldn’t look bad either lol. The Pirates would have to give up some MAJOR prospoects to get Cuddyer and they won’t do that.

That being said, I think the Pirates are actually in a position to go out and sign an expensive free agent this off-season. With McCutchen, Walker, etc on rookie salaries for a few years, the Pirates have plenty of room in their budget to try and bring in a big name for 2 years. Seriously, why not?

The Pirates are in a similiar situation as the Penguins were in 2008. Crosby, Malkin, and Staal were all on rookie contracts so they could afford to add salary under the cap like trying to sign Hossa.

Why would the Pirates trade away some good prospects now that they are building a base. Where are the players on the DL. Can’t anyone come back and help this team? Ohlendorph, Meeks, Doumit, Alvarez. Pena? He just signed a huge contract that the Pirates can’t afford. Lets get real with the wish list. The Pirates should hope they have Hurdle locked up before the players. He is the main reason for the Pirate turn around.

Matt Capps???? Please do not bring back that guy. He STINKS in MN.

  • Josh

Maybe if we’d have kept Ramirez, Gonzalez, and Capps, we would’ve been having these discussions several years ago…

      Don’t leave out Bautista…

Man, the stupid fools who want to rip apart the pirates current team to get some old bum. Man, is Mike Vukovcan a stupid ignorant moron. Like most of the hosts on The Fan too. Let’s just destroy our current team that’s doing well and could have more returns for years. Again, such stupid morons in the media.

  • TheMediaStinks

Actually, we need to fire Mike Vukovcan the moron and Andrew Philoponi the moron and Paul Zeist the moron too. That will help the pirates more.

  • RICH MAZANEK

THEY ARE DOING FINE WITH WHAT THEY HAVE. HOW THE OLD SAYING GOES JUST GO WITH WHAT GOT YOU WHERE YOU ARE. LET THE YOUNG KIDS GET THE CREDIT FOR ALL THERE HARD WORK. AND LET THEM HAVE FUN DOING IT.
