More Cooling Centers Open
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- With temperatures soaring well into the 90s and a heat index in the triple digits for another day, officials have opened more cooling centers.
The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. today.
The extreme heat increases the risk of heat-related illnesses like heat stroke and heat exhaustion.
To help ensure that folks who don't have air conditioning can stay safe in this extreme heat, the Allegheny County Department of Human Services yesterday announced the openings of seven new cooling centers in the following areas:
- Homewood (Citiparks Homewood Center)
- Knoxville (Elder-Ado Knoxville Sr. Center)
- Monroeville (Monroeville Senior Center)
- Oakmont (Riverview Community Center)
- Pine Twp. (Wexford Volunteer Fire Co.)
- Plum (Plum Community Center)
- Verona (Verona Municipal Building)

Likewise, the county is also extending the hours of its cooling centers.
Outside Allegheny County, Lawrence County residents who need to escape the heat are welcome to cool off at the Scottish Rite Cathedral on East Lincoln Avenue in New Castle. Visitors are asked to use the side door entrance.
Also, Leetsdale Borough is opening up its municipal building for residents looking for a cool spot to rest. The room will be open from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. today.
