Pirates Trade For Derrek Lee

By: Mike Vukovcan

Pittsburgh (KDKA)- Pirates GM Neal Huntington has made a trade in an attempt to help the struggling offense.

The Pirates and Baltimore Orioles have agreed on a trade that sends Derrek Lee to the Pirates in exchange for minor league first baseman Aaron Baker.

The deal will be official pending Lee’s physical.

In 84 games with the Orioles this season, Lee is hitting .248 with 15 doubles, 12 homers and 41 RBIs.

Lee’s numbers have been much more impressive since the All-Star break.

In his last 17 games, Lee, 35, is hitting .328 with 11 extra-base hits and 16 RBIs. He has hit .294 since June 17.

Baker, who’s at Class A Bradenton, is hitting for a .285, 15 HR and 21 2B in 382 AB. Had 18 HR in 459 AB last year.

Baker isn’t considered one of the Pirates Top 30 prospects and has been passed up by Altoona 1B Matt Curry on first baseman depth chart.

He was an 11th round pick in the 2009 draft.

The Pirates hands are tied – actually, they really can’t be a big time player now. They’re only in year three of rebuilding the farm system that Littlefild destroyed. I’m in no way exonerating the past eighteen years of bad ownership and management. However, teams like the Phillies are deep and can do things. Giving away good young players for “rent a players” is completely stupid at this point. You, like many other “fans” should learn a little about things before you post.

Think of who is at firstbase now …………………….THIS IS A UPGRADE

  2. Stan says:

Derrek Lee really turned it on for the home stretch last year and the indications are that it’s going to happen again this year. So yes, this is what an upgrade looks like.

MLB is a joke. The Giants get Beltran and the Phillies get Pence. The rich just keep getting richer, just like real life. At this point I don’t even want the Pirates to trade any of the core or younger talent away. This is a joke of a trade, that was only made because Overbay was overpaid and is terrible.

Honestly the more i look at this trade the more i like it… lee is a second half of the year player and has been really hot lately. Plus I would take anyone over overbay and to get him we gave up nothing. I actually like this considering i expected the pirates to do nothing at the deadline

  5. Doug says:

This was an excellent trade, NH accomplished getting a replacement for Overbay, a right handed bat and a good fielder and only gave up a class A player. Doggy is correct that the Pirates are still rebuilding and we can’t give the farm away for a rented player.

The management of the Pirates have continued to demonstrate they are not interested enough to improve the team NOW. I don’t think they are ready to contend for the MLB title but I think it is very important for this young team to finish over .500 for the year. I think it would go a long way to build their confidence (to mention rewarding the fans for their support over the years).
Derrick Lee is not the answer!

  7. Doggy says:

Your quite misinformed on many things. You sound like a typical dumb “fan.” Read my post under Doggy above.

i dont buy it look at the indians last night with the trade for the rockies pitcher jimenz the owner is to cheap to do anything after 19 yrs at least try some moves

  9. jack says:

.706 OPS. that is a just barely average number.
take what you will from that

  10. Corey says:

The Pirates season officially ended today losing to the Philies 3 straight. These trades won’t matter. Derek Lee a has been and Ludwick a has been. 4 1/2 games to much to overcome. Close to falling below 500. Get Nutting out of town and bring Cuban
