Elderly Woman Dies In Washington Co. Fire

CALIFORNIA BOROUGH (KDKA) – An elderly woman was killed in a Washington County fire Monday night.

According to emergency dispatchers, the fire broke out in the 300-block of Union Street in California Borough at 8:19 p.m.

The fire started in the garage, but quickly spread to the home and fully engulfed it.

Multiple fire units responded to the scene to battle the blaze.

A neighbor attempted to enter the home and rescue the woman, but was pushed back by the flames and smoke.

"Upon arrival we had heavy fire coming out of pretty much every window and door of the house. High heat, temperatures. We had a couple firefighters go down with heat exhaustion. We had three of them treated at the scene and we also had the neighbor that was treated for smoke inhalation and I believe he was transported to the hospital," Captain John Mosher said.

An 87-year-old woman was declared dead at the scene at 8:40 p.m. Her identity has not been released at this time.

"Obviously, there was an extensive fire within this structure and it appears she was trying to make her way out, but unfortunately [she] was unable to do that," Washington County Coroner Tim Warco said.

Warco also said she lived with her son, who was not at home at the time of the fire.

Neighbors said the woman had eight or nine children.

The State Police Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
