Bringing Down The House: Reducing Representatives In Harrisburg

PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) — KDKA Radio’s Mike Pintek talks with Pennsylvania Speaker of the House Sam Smith, R-Jefferson County, about his proposal to cut the number of Representatives in the House down from 203 to 153.

Governor Tom Corbett has expressed his support for such a measure, and believes it would pass if sent to Pennsylvania voters.

Smith’s proposal is one of five discussed Tuesday before the State Government Committee on H.B. 153, all of which were aimed at reducing the number of House members.

Pintek asked Smith about the potential benefits and threats that a smaller House would offer, and why Smith thinks Pennsylvania’s House – the second largest in the nation – needs to be trimmed.

The Governor BELIEVES it would pass if it went to the voters? You’re darn right it would. Let’s see how many of the legislators vote to get rid of their own jobs! This should be classic. If I’m a betting man, they all decry it and state that their job is simply too important.

best news I heard in a while…it would be the best thing for our state. they are just a bunch of leeches living off the taxpayers… maybe now they can pay for their own haircut like the rest of us..

Wish we could go all volunteer like Texas. Notice Texas is running a year after year surplus. And all the legislators have other permanent jobs so there’s no health insurance for life or none of that FOOLISHNESS. Harrisburg—What a racket!!! What a Joke!! I’m not laughing!!!

My questions is why only 50 why not 100??? Let it go to the voters!!!! Thats if the voting can be trusted! Paper ballots need to come back!

  4. Lorrie says:

Clearly PA residents/voters would support the reduction in the state legislature! Contacting your local representative/senator and stating your support for HB 153 will communicate to those who wish to “kill it” that the voters are, in fact, paying attention. The more we speak up, the more likely it is to happen!
