Authorities Make Arrest In Pedicab Hit & Run

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Pedicabs are becoming more familiar on city streets, but last night one trip was cut short.

A pedicab belonging to Green Gears which operates out of a garage in a South Side alley was rear-ended. The company's owner wasn't talking.

The pedicab was hit here in the 900-block of Penn Avenue near the Sonoma Grille where John Ajay is general manager. The vehicle that slammed into them took off.

"Heard a big bang like there was a car crash out front," he said.

The pedicab's driver, Dawn Zacharias, appeared to be dazed.

"I think that she was in shock a little bit and was up and walking around," Ajay said.

The passengers,30-year-old Jeff Server and 35-year-old Melanie Leap, of Monroeville, were lying in the street. The pedicab was mangled and on its side.

Police say a Yellow Cab van driver chased the Buick Regal that left the scene.

Officers arrested 18-year-old Matthew Powdrill of Garfield at the Wendy's on Baum Boulevard. His eyes appeared to be glassy. He's in jail.

Those hurt suffered shoulder, neck and arm injuries and were taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital. Since then, all have been released.
