7 Sickened By Ammonia Leak In Murrysville

MURRYSVILLE (KDKA) – Seven people were sickened after an ammonia leak in Murrysville.

The leak happened at General Products and Supply Company on Technology Lane at the Murrysville Business Park.

Seven employees were treated by paramedics at the scene.

Two of them were taken to Forbes Regional Hospital as a precaution.

KDKA-TV has learned the ammonia was leaking from a drum, but there's no word on what caused the leak.

"[We tried to] contain it ourselves and it got to be pretty bad with the respirators we had, it was beyond what our capabilities were so we dialed 911," Gene Ciafre, CEO of General Products & Supply, said.

"And we got the help and I'm glad we did because these guys have the equipment, know what they're doing and they've done an outstanding job already," he added.

Hazmat workers dressed in yellow suits showered off in decontamination area.

They are now transferring the ammonia to a new container.
