Police File Homicide Charges In Fatal New Castle Shooting

NEW CASTLE (KDKA) -- Police in New Castle say they have filed homicide charges after a man was shot and killed while reportedly trying to break up a fight near an apartment complex earlier this week.

Investigators say they are now searching for 24-year-old Dajuan Dawson in connection with the death of 35-year-old Zarmara Stelter early Wednesday morning.

According to New Castle police, Dawson is facing charges of criminal homicide, aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, simple assault and firearms violations.

The shooting happened around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 1100-block of Pin Oak Drive near the Crestview Apartment Complex.

Police say that according to witnesses, a crowd gathered there after a fight broke out between two women. Investigators say Stelter was attempting to break up the fight when he was wounded.

He was flown by medical helicopter to a hospital in Youngstown, Ohio, but later died from his injuries.

The investigation continues.
