International Fugitive Facing More Charges

VERONA (KDKA) - A fugitive who was arrested in Verona on Tuesday was in court today and is facing more charges.

Frank Perez, Jr., 30, kept authorities at bay for several hours in the 400-block of Center Avenue in Verona.

Perez, also known as Kenneth Leon Simms, is wanted for a murder that happened back in 1999 in Lake County, Indiana.

Perez is now facing new charges, including assault on a federal officer through use of a deadly weapon and a separate firearms charge.

The assault charge would carry maximum of 20 years if convicted.

The criminal complaint said Perez fired "upwards of 20-25 rounds" at police during Tuesday's standoff.

Perez was armed with a Ruger P89 handgun, a Mossberg 12-gauge shotgun and a Smith & Wesson .45-caliber handgun plus a box of 9 mm ammunition.

Perez is being held without bail and will have a preliminary hearing on Friday.
