93-7 The Fan Named New Pirates Flagship Station

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Fans of the Pittsburgh Pirates will have a new place to tune in to listen to games on the radio.

It was announced on Wednesday that Sportsradio 93-7 The Fan will become the new flagship station for Pirates baseball.

The station will produce and broadcast all regular season and postseason games each season. They will also broadcast a minimum of 16 spring training games.

“We are extremely excited to announce our new strategic partnership with CBS RADIO’s KDKA-FM and to be back home with the CBS RADIO family, which had been synonymous with Pirates baseball for more than 80 years,” Pirates President Frank Coonelly said. “The partnership allows us to move our flagship station to 93-7 The Fan, an all-sports station with non-stop local programming. It also allows us to maintain the same high-quality broadcasts and reach that our fans have been accustomed to.”

Pirates fans should not be alarmed about the move, because the familiar radio broadcasters will not be changing.

Greg Brown, Tim Neverett, Steve Blass, Bob Walk and John Wehner will continue to call the games.

“CBS RADIO Pittsburgh is very pleased and proud to present Pirates games on Sportsradio 93-7 The Fan, as well as utilize our three other local stations to bring the experience of Pirates baseball to area fans,” CBS RADIO Pittsburgh Senior Vice President and Market Manager Michael Young said.

Does this mean the personalities on The Fan can no longer be as openly critical of the Pirates organization? Because if so, that sucks.

you are so right Theresa…. Could NOT agree more. Well done Pirates.

Tell me one thing you have EVER heard on 104.7 that is racist? Be specific.

I am tired of the G.Damn race card. Stop using race as an excuse to be lazy.

  3. Brownie says:

This works for me. The Pirates and the FAN, both are things that I hate. With them all in one place…it makes it more convenient for me to avoid them.

  4. Spockmckoy says:

Know doubt the most recent station dumped them because nobody was listening and it cost them broadcast monies.

I don’t know where Frank Coonelly came up with 80 years with CBS, when during the late 40’s and 50’s, I listened to the Pirates on WWSW, with Rosey Rosewell and Bob Prince doing the play by play, live from Forbes Field and away games off the ticker tape. I can’t remember when the change to KDKA occured.

    1. JP Gibb says:

Frank’s math does seem to be a bit off; per Wikipedia: “KDKA first broadcast the Pirates on August 5, 1921; with Westinghouse foreman Harold Arlin behind the mic. Broadcasts ended in 1924, but returned in 1936. Except for a few years on WWSW in the late 1940s and early 1950s, the Pirates were on KDKA for 61 years.”

  7. Mark says:

Thank God they moved from 104.7. Now the Right Wing knuckle dragging hate mongering mouth breathers can be told EXACTLY how they feel and how they should think by the scripted neocon about everything in their life for 24 hours a day uninterrupted. Good for them! It makes it so nice to go through life letting someone else control your thoughts, emotions, and opinions. Me, I’ll be tuning into the Pirates..

    1. JP Gibb says:

      The “New Civility” everyone.

Hey Mark, instead of just repeating the same DNC talking-points, try *actually* listening to WPGB for a couple weeks. It’ll open your eyes, and your mind, to what’s really going on in this country.

      1. William Trimble says:

JP gibb yeah from a propaganda perspective fueled by neo conservatives that have brought war and poverty to america, and i am sure you are not 1 of the 1%that hold all the wealth, you are like the rest of us only dumber because you take RNC talking points and tea party for the people garbage and believe it…how do repubilcans get idiots who are working class to accept their views of corporate tax breaks

      2. love Pittsburgh sports says:

my stomach couldn’t take listening to that station for 5 minutes let along a “couple weeks”. NO THANKS!!!!!!!

  8. William Trimble says:

  9. dave says:

I am disapointed with this move. I will have to listen to someone else to get my sports talk fix. I think that this will hurt ratings because there are so many games. I know tons of people that listen to the fan but I only know one person who actuall listens to the pirates. Stupid move.
