40th Street Bridge Closure, Other Road Work To Cause Weekend Traffic Headaches

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Will your weekend plans be affected by construction delays? It could if you aren't aware of the weekend projects PennDOT has planned throughout the region. Here is a rundown of this weekend's work from the KDKA-TV RealTime Traffic Center:

40th Street Bridge Closure:

As part of the ongoing long-term improvements on Route 28, the 40th Street Bridge will be closing for the entire weekend beginning tonight at 8 p.m. It's all being done so crews can reconstruct the intersection with Route 28. All southbound traffic on Route 28 will stay on the new bypass lanes in Millvale. The bridge will remain closed until 5 a.m. Monday.

I-79 Wexford Area:

PennDOT will be installing seals on the bridge that carries I-79 over Mingo Road. This is just north of the Wexford exit (73) in Marshall Township. The worst of the restrictions will be overnight tonight (Friday). Traffic will be single-lane in both directions from 7 p.m. tonight through 7 a.m. tomorrow (Saturday). Southbound work will be done first followed by the northbound lanes. Expect delays and stopped traffic at any point through the overnight hours as this work is completed.

I-79 Between Bridgeville and Washington:

One of the most extensive projects this weekend involves I-79 between Bridgeville and Washington. Traffic will be limited to a single lane in both directions all weekend beginning at 7 p.m. tonight (Friday). The single-lane traffic will be in effect from a half-mile north of Bridgeville (exit 54) all the way to Washington. Restrictions will be in effect until Sunday morning at 8 a.m.

Parkway East Inbound:

If you're driving into town Saturday morning, be on the lookout for some periodic closures on the Parkway East. Crews will be inspecting the overpass the carries the Boulevard of the Allies on-ramp to the Parkway. There will be short-term lane closures between 6 a.m. and noon Saturday while the inspection crew does their work. This is only on the inbound side.

Parkway East In Monroeville:

Electrical crews will be doing work above the Parkway Sunday in the area of the Thompson Run Road overpass in Monroeville. This will cause traffic to be completely stopped on the Parkway East for 15 minutes at a time. These stoppages could happen at any time Sunday between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Fort Duquesne Bridge Outbound:

The right lane on the outbound Fort Duquesne Bridge will be closed approaching the Parkway North from 4 a.m. until 8 p.m. tomorrow (Saturday) as crews re-set bearings on the bridge.

Route 50 (Washington Road/Pike):

The continuing project on Washington Pike continues as crews work to widen and resurface the road. Traffic will be down to a single-lane in both directions from Collier Avenue in Heidelberg to Boden Avenue in Carnegie as paving work continues.

Also, the eastbound side near Thoms Run Road in Collier Township will be a single lane as the road-widening project continues.

All of these restrictions last from 8 p.m. tonight through 6 a.m. Monday.

Route 22/30 in Imperial:

Exit Ramp closures will be in effect. The ramp from Eastbound 22 to Routes 30 and 978 will be closed for paving 11 a.m. until midnight Saturday.

The ramp from Route 30 east on to Route 22 West will be closed 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. Detours will be posted.

Business Route 22 and the Parkway East in Monroeville Near The Turnpike:

Business 22 will be closed in both directions overnight Saturday into Sunday at the point where the outbound Parkway East passes over the road to connect to the Turnpike. The closure will start at 11 p.m. Saturday and run until 8 a.m. Sunday.

The Parkway East outbound will be a single lane overnights through the weekend near the same overpass bridge.

Boston Bridge:

The Boston Bridge connecting Elizabeth Township with Versailles Borough will be closed tonight from 7 p.m. until 5 a.m. tomorrow (Saturday) morning. Detours will be posted.

Those are the special projects for the weekend.

Also, commuters should keep in mind the ongoing long-term projects across the area:

Route 65

Route 65 (Ohio River Boulevard) will close long-term in both directions at the Marshall Avenue (Route 19) interchange.  The on-and-off ramps to Beaver Avenue and California Avenue will serve as traffic detours. Crews are rehabilitating the mainline Route 65 bridges at the interchange between the West End and McKees Rocks bridges.

Route 28
In Pittsburgh through 2014, the Northbound Route 28 will be reduced to a single lane between the Chestnut Street Overpass and the 40th Street Bridge.

Crosstown I-579 Bridges and Ramps

Through mid-November, the bridges that connect Sixth and Seventh Avenues to Washington Place over I-579 near the Civic Arena will be closed.
