Operator Injured After Crane Topples Down Embankment

WINFIELD TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- A crane fell off a bridge with its operator still inside in Butler County.

This happened in Winfield Township while crews were setting up a guardrail.

"He lifted some pieces that he swung to the edge to lay the pieces in place and the crane tipped, fell off the bridge down into the ravine about 50-feet," Bob Skrak, of PennDOT, said.

The operator and crane ended up near Mushroom Field Road.

Rescuers tried to use heavy equipment to remove the crane, but that didn't work. It took them an hour to dig the earth from underneath the operator.

The crane operator has not yet been identified. He was responsive when he went to a local hospital.
