Man Facing Charges In Redstone Twp. Fatal Accident

REDSTONE TOWNSHIP (KDKA/AP) -- A man is jailed on charges he was allegedly driving drunk when he struck and killed a local woman and injured her husband as the couple changed a tire in Fayette County Thursday night.

Online court records don't list an attorney for 40-year-old Donald Lowther, of Merrittstown.

He's charged with homicide by vehicle while driving drunk and other crimes. Redstone Township police say Lowther ran into 21-year-old Kelly Branson, of Uniontown, and her husband, Adam, as they were changing a tire along Route 40 in Redstone Township.

The Fayette County coroner says Kelly Branson died at the scene.

According to police, the woman was wearing a reflective, fluorescent safety vest and the hazard lights on the vehicle were on.

"[The road] doesn't have much of a shoulder and the vehicle was partially on the shoulder and partially on the roadway with the hazard lights flashing," Sgt. Norman Howard, of the Redstone Township Police Department, said Thursday night. "They were to the rear of the vehicle, partially in the roadway."

The impact sent her body into the road.

Her husband was flown to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital where he was reported in serious condition Friday.
