Firefighter Responds To Father's Fatal Crash In Lawrence Co.

NEW WILMINGTON (KDKA) -- A man on his way to a funeral was killed after he lost control of his car in Lawrence County.

The accident happened on State Route 158 in New Wilmington.

The victim, Harry McEwen, 84, was the father of one of the firefighters who arrived at the scene of the crash.

McEwen was the only person inside the white Buick LeSabre.

"I saw the car wrapped around the tree – the tracks coming from 158 there," Valerie Shaw, an eyewitness, said. "I saw everything, basically."

State police say McEwen lost control on a curve, crossed the road, hit a guard rail and eventually crashed into a tree.

Second Assistant Fire Chief Brad McEwen, the victim's son, was among the first responders.

"What you're never prepared for is that it's one of your own," New Wilmington Police Chief Carmen Piccirillo said.
